Beaches in the Ionian Islands

Corfu Beach Beach

Agios Georgios Beach is located about 30 kilometers south of Corfu city center and is very beautiful, while Agios Gordios on the island’s west coast is very popular and offers spectacular views with its dramatic rock formations. Agios Stefanos is located about 45 kilometers northwest of the city of Corfu with a stretch of sand and a reputation as a safe beach, protected from strong and unpleasant winds. Paleokastritsa is also located northwest of the city of Corfu near the picturesque village of the same name.

But some of the most evocative beaches are Myrtiotissa and Kalami. Even writer Lawrence Durrell was fascinated by these beaches and called Myrtiotissa “the most beautiful beach in the world.” It was the Kalami beach that served as the geographical inspiration for the author’s novel, Sel Prospero.

Located on the west coast of the island, this beach takes its name from the magnificent monastery located close to the village of Pelekas. Kalami Beach is located about 30 kilometers from Corfu near the village of Viachatika and has a pebbly coastline.

Ithaca Beach

The beaches of the island with this mythical name are as evocative as the myths that were born in the Ionian region. They are set in a beautiful and lush landscape and are known for their crystal blue waters and clean golden sands.

Near the village of Agios Ioannis about nine kilometers from the town of Vathy, is the beach of the same name with pristine emerald waters. Just two kilometers from Vathy is Dexa beach with golden sand and white pebbles in the foreground of a vibrant green mountain landscape. Frikes Beach is 13 kilometers west of Vathy and is busy and popular and a great beach for swimming. Near the village of Frikes is Polis beach, another clean beach with a pebbly shoreline.

Kefalonia Beach

The beaches of Kefalonia are equally beautiful and many of them proudly boast the Blue Flag of Europe. The most famous and most popular is the golden beach of Myrtos, located north of the town of Argostoli, near the village of Assos, with its dramatic rock cliffs. It is an organized beach with sun loungers and umbrellas for rent and a busy and social beach bar.

Antisamos Beach is located about 22 kilometers from Argostoli, near the village of Sami, and has a pebble beach front in the foreground of beautiful green hills. Emblisi Beach near the fishing village of Fiskardo is another popular resort and to the east of the village is Foki Beach, a small beach with lots of trees for natural shade.

Two of the larger and wider beaches are Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos and it seems that these two stretches of sand were shaped by nature for the pure pleasure of sunbathers.

On the south coast of the island, close to the airport, is a beach that stands out for its orange sand. Ammes is also a popular choice for families as the water is quite shallow. Located near the village of Svoronata. Other beaches to the south are Avithos, Ai Helis and Trapezaki.

Zakynthos Beach

Zakynthos, also known as Zante, offers endless coastline and stunning beaches, such as the popular Laganas beach where the Caretta-Caretta turtle calls home. Zakynthos Beach is also very popular for its water sports activities. These beaches are very popular because they seem completely unspoiled and unique. Navagio Beach, which literally means “shipwreck”, is so named for the shipwrecks that rise from the shoreline. It also has unique white volcanic sand and is probably one of the most beautiful beaches in the region.

Kalamaki Beach is located in the south near the village of the same name and is well organized and is a protected part of the National Marine Park, like Laganas due to its Caretta-Caretta population. Two cosmopolitan tourist resorts, Alykes and Alykanas, are located in the northwest and are lively and social beaches with great beach bars.

Kythira Beach

On the small island of Kythira, the beaches are beautiful and unspoiled. Clear waters, dramatic rock views, and golden sand characterize this beach. Kythira Beach is very popular for water sports.

Ideal for sailing is Kapsali beach near downtown Chora or Kythira. Kapsali is a well-organized beach and the most popular, along with Agia Pelagia, Palaiopoli and Platia Ammos. The beaches of Chalkos, Melidoni, Lykodimou, and Agios Nikolaos are equally beautiful, but relatively less crowded. One of the most striking beaches on the island is Fyri Ammos because of its red-pebbled coastline.

Lefkada Beach

Lefkada or Lefkas is a popular destination for many Europeans and this is because its beaches are clean, organized and offer excellent tourist facilities. One of the most beautiful is Porto Katsiki, situated in the foreground of a green hilly landscape, near the village of Athani. Kathisma Beach, literally “chair”, is located 14 kilometers east of the town of Lefkada, near the village of Agios Nikitas, and has the best white sand on the island.

Another pleasant beach near the fishing village of Agios Nikitas is the beach of the same name and being in the fishing village means having excellent tavernas nearby for hungry sunbathers. For windsurfing, Vassiliki beach is the best choice, while Nidri, the most cosmopolitan, is the best place to socialize and party.
